Historical background
During the Venetian period, Lazaretta Island was used as a quarantine station for travelers arriving in Chania who were suspected of carrying infectious diseases. The “lazaretto” system was established to protect cities from epidemics, isolating incoming passengers before they were allowed entry. This practice continued under Ottoman rule and remained in operation through the era of the Cretan State, highlighting the island’s long-standing role in public health protection. |
